Laboratory Testing for Covid 19 (SARS-CoV-2)

By October 15, 2020 November 30th, 2020 No Comments

Due to the increased incidence of COVID-19, testing supplies, particularly PCR test kits, are in short supply. This is true throughout the area due to an increased demand for testing, and PCR kits are on backorder.

If your child has been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or been diagnosed with COVID-19 due to symptoms, then your child must quarantine for 14 days from the last day of exposure.  The quarantine is required regardless of whether your child gets tested for coronavirus, and regardless of the test result.  Since tests are in short supply, and because it will not change the requirement for quarantine, we are not currently testing patients who have been exposed but are asymptomatic.

Our Laboratory currently offers three different tests for Corona virus infection.  Availability of these tests is dependent on Manufacturers’ Allotments.

  • COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) RT-PCR Test: The test detects genetic material from the virus and is used to detect current infection. The test is typically performed on a nasopharyngeal swab. This test has relatively high sensitivity and specificity (low risk of being false positive or negative). The ideal time for testing is 2-3 days after onset of symptoms or 5-7 days after exposure if asymptomatic. The specimen is collected in our office (a $25.00 convenience fee applies) and sent to Quest Laboratory for testing. Results are typically back in 2 – 3 days however, may take  up to 10 days to be available.
  • COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) Rapid Antigen Test:  Is designed to detect proteins from the virus that cause COVID-19 and, like the above test, is used to diagnose current infection. This test is performed in our office and results are typically available promptly. As with the PCR test (above), the ideal time for testing is 2-3 days after onset of symptoms or 5-7 days after exposure if asymptomatic. Charges will be submitted to your insurance. However, you are responsible for any charges not covered by insurance.  This test is used for screening purposes for asymptomatic patients ONLY.
  • Covid-19 serology (Antibody testing):  This is a blood test and is used to detect a prior infection. It typically takes 2-4 weeks to develop antibodies after an infection. The turnaround time of this test is 24-72 hours and cross reactivity with other types of corona viruses is possible. The specimen is collected at our office (a $25.00 collection fee applies) and sent to Quest Lab for testing. Please note that a positive test for antibodies does not indicate immunity to infection with SARS-CoV2 as it is not known whether the antibodies generated by prior infection are protective or how long such a protection might last.

If you have any questions about which test is needed for your child, please discuss with your provider.

If you wish to be tested, please use your Keona Account to send us a request as well as your reason for wanting testing. If you do not have a Keona account, please click here to set one up quickly and easily.

Once your request is received, our office will contact your regarding your appointment time.

As COVID testing is relatively new, we ask that you read FACT sheets to better understand the benefits and risks of testing. You will be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging these risks, your understanding of the processing of these tests including patient responsibility for charges not covered by your insurance company.
